The Soroca Fortress closed its doors to tourists until next spring. The second renovation stage as part of the project “Medieval Jewels: Hotin, Soroca, Suceava Fortresses” started there at the beginning of May.

Contacted by IPN for details, the acting director of the Soroca-based “Nicolae Bulat” Museum of History and Ethnography Victor Botnaru said that in the immediate period the fortress’ external and internal walls will be cleaned, the superior passage will be waterproofed and three vaults will be restored. The wolf hole at the entrance to Soroca Fortress, which was discovered the previous archeological season, will be conserved. An elevator will be installed in one of the towers of the fortress for persons with disabilities.

“According to the project, the works are to be completed by the end of 2023. In winter, the fortress does not work. I don’t know what next winter will be like, but the fortes will most probably be reopened next spring,” said the acting director of the museum.

The second stage of the EU-funded renovation project costs €1.6 million. The first stage of the project was completed in 2015.
