Parliament must base its solutions to the Transnistrian conflict on the principle of territorial integrity of Moldova, political analyst Ion Tabarta stated for IPN when asked to pronounce on the decision that Parliament is to adopt after voting a statement on the peaceful resolution of the dispute on June 21.

“It is hard to say what kind of solutions the authorities should suggest, but I don’t think we will have a magic solution that will lead to the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. We need solutions that would attract the Transnistrians. What Chisinau can do now is to continue the diplomatic talks,” said Ion Tabarta.

The analyst does not believe that strengthening the border on the Nistru may be a reasonable solution. “Any solution must be based on the principle of territorial integrity. I do not think we should accept the idea of federalization. This can be done only in case of an extreme necessity and such a solution should stipulate that Tiraspol is administratively subordinate to Chisinau. Transnistria should be granted the status of autonomous region, as in the case of Gagauzia,” he stated.

According to Ion Tabarta, a broader dialogue is needed for identifying solutions. All the sides involved in the format of the talks and civil society should be consulted. A compromise should be reached by all the political forces. Parliament must consult more people, but the decisions must be developed from the principles of state integrity and sovereignty.

On June 21, Parliament adopted a statement on the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict. It is to adopt soon a decision with solutions for improving the situation on the left bank of the Nistru.
