The Social-Democratic faction in the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) is ready to take part in the activity of a broader coalition to overcome the crisis, but only if the chairperson of the Council is not the councillor on behalf of the Liberal Party (PL), the leader of the faction Eduard Musuc said on September 4.
He said that the faction is concerned about the situation created in the CMC, as the coalition formed of 26 councillors is in crisis. During three months it did not manage to elect the chairperson of the Council and to designate the administration of the Chisinau City Hall as well as to solve the main problems confronting the municipality.
Musuc said that the Social-Democratic faction renounces any post in the administration of the capital in order to end the speculations and confirm its readiness to settle the problems faced by the residents and implement the changes promised to the voters.
Speaking about the future candidate for CMC chairman, Musuc said that he must not have political or personal commitments with the Mayor General (e.n. Dorin Chirtoaca is the vice president of the Liberal Party and nephew of the PL president Mihai Ghimpu), but represent all the councilmen and factions of the Council in the relations with the Mayor.
The Social-Democratic leader stated that the appointment of a Liberal councillor to the post of chairman would hinder the functioning of the Council. He voiced hope that the PL and Mihai Ghimpu will prove constructivism and will renounce what he described as ambition. If a candidate on behalf of the PL is named as chairperson of the CMC, the Social-Democrat faction will not take part in the coalition, Musuc stressed.
The councillor also said that after the discussions he had with his colleagues from other factions forming part of the coalition, he understood that they are of the same opinion and would be in favour of the candidates Pavel Caba, leader of the Moldova Noatra Alliance’s faction, and Alexandru Tanase, leader of the Democratic faction in the Council. Musuc made it clear that he would support these candidates or would accept to examine other candidates.
Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the PL leader Mihai Ghimpu joked that he will withdraw his candidacy only in favour of Eduard Musuc. He said that the voters were the ones that decided on the number of mandates in the City Council and he will respect their will. He also said that a meeting of the leaders of the parties that signed the document for constituting the majority coalition took place on the same day and each president is to make sure that the councillors attend the meetings so as the municipality’s problems can be solved.
The declaration on the constitution of the majority coalition was signed by the leaders of four parties late in June. The coalition is composed of 26 of the 51 municipal councillors. Owing to the absence of at least one councilman at the meeting, the chairman of the CMC and the deputy mayors of the capital could not be elected.
