Children and teens easily borrow such vices as smoking and alcohol consumption from grownups. This is a signal of alarm given by doctors in Moldova, according to whom smoking and drinking of alcohol among the young generation reached worrisome proportions the last few years. In this connection, there was launched a campaign titled “Moldova says NO to smoking and alcohol” that is designed to discourage theses phenomena and to explain the risks to which the young people expose themselves when they smoke and drink alcohol, IPN reports.

As part of the campaign, thousand ds of children, their parents and teachers from Chisinau, Cahul and Bălți are informed about the risks and side effects of smoking and alcohol consumption.

“Smoking causes such cardiovascular diseases, lung, laryngeal and other types of cancer. Smoking and alcohol drinking are easily borrowed by students. We see many students smoking. Until now we spoke only about smoking as a source of nicotine, but now there are also electronic cigarettes that contain many toxic substances. The explanation of many persons is that the young people are bored and dependence appears as a result of boredom. I think there should be staged more school and out-of-school activities for the young people to be engaged in different events,” university lecturer Luminița Suveica stated in the program “Moldova Live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1.

Doctors warn that smoking and drinking are very noxious and lead to real dependence that results in neurological disorders, heart diseases, arrhythmia, myocardial infarction.

“The bad eating habits, sedentariness, polluted environment, smoking and alcohol are factors that worsen the population’s state of health. Smoking and alcohol consumption affect the state of health the most. Smoking and alcohol consumption are discussed in relation to the health of a person and social problems they cause are not addressed, but these vices create collateral victims. Regrettably, as these models are perpetuated in society, they are borrowed by the young generation,” said narcologist Vadim Afteni.

According to the World Health Organization, smoking is one of the major causes of disease and mortality all over the world. The lifespan of a smoker is by 5-20 years shorter. One third of the mortal accidents are the result of alcohol consumption.
