Twenty-one of the 180 intersections equipped with traffic lights in Chisinau now have intelligent systems. The smart traffic lights monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic using an array of sensors to automatically route that traffic and signal any technical malfunctions to dispatchers.
Acting Mayor Ruslan Codreanu said the new system will enable live monitoring of the intersections prone to congestion. When jams occur, an operator will be able to remotely intervene and increase green light times to allow vehicles to pass.
Codreanu said 44 other intersections will be equipped with smart systems within the next half a year so that gradually all street lights get the upgrade by the end of 2020. To this end, the 2019 city budget has earmarked 2 million lei.
