The Romanian newspaper „Evenimentul Zilei”, quoted by Info-Prim Neo, wrote on Monday, August 28, that approximately 2.000 persons gather daily in the Matca commune in a place called by the locals “Slaves market” and hope to find a work place. Most of these persons are from the Republic of Moldova. Every morning, at 4.00, 1.500-2.000 persons gather at the site entitled “Slaves market”. “It’s not literally a slave market, as the laborers are paid and fed by the employees” states Mayor Ionel Pohrib. The price of a days work in agriculture has drastically decreased. Vegetable gardener Constantin Vieru states that the payoff “was of RON 450.000 (approx. MDL 200) including a meal, and now the wages are at RON 300.000 (approx. 130 MDL). The explication is pretty simple – there are too many persons willing to work. The supply of workers is much higher than the demand.”. This market is visited by workers from al over the country, especially from the republic of Moldova and from the poor villages from the left side of Prut river, the editorial mentions. Matca commune has 13.000 inhabitants and over 600 hectares of solariums.
