The Security and Intelligence Service and the National Anticorruption Center will be given access to footage captured by the CCTV cameras of the Traffic Monitoring System. Access will be for viewing mode only, meaning the agencies will not have clearance for processing or editing purposes. The provisions are contained in a bill published by the Ministry of the Interior for public consultation.

The Ministry says the measure will boost the capacity of the two agencies to prevent and combat actions affecting state security and improve their contribution in fighting corruption and recovering proceeds of crime.

Under the bill, a strictly determined number of SIS and CNA officers will have access. Also, officers “will not have unlimited access in instant monitoring mode”, the public is assured.

Today access to the Traffic Monitoring System is limited to a number of agencies that include the Information Technology Service, the General Police Inspectorate, and the State Protection and Guards Service.

The Traffic Surveillance System currently runs 73 stations, 48 of which are located in Chisinau. 23 new stations are to be built soon on national roads.
