Sic!: Why does Usatyi want Trump as President?

Judging by his straight and blunt style of communication and by the popularity that appeared ‘overnight’, the leader of the Political Party “Our Party” Renato Usatyi can be described as a kind of Donald Trump (candidate for President in the U.S.) of the Moldovan politics, consider the authors of a new article published on sic.md. These say that Renato Usatyi never forgets to periodically make by a controversial statement that would cause at least a slight commotion in the media and would ensure wide coverage in the local media, even if he is often presented in a negative light, IPN reports.

According to the authors, the fact that the mayor of Balti decided to throw his support to Donald Trump within the presidential elections in the U.S. is not surprising. More exactly, Usatyi encourages ‘all the people who support him in the U.S.’ to vote for Trump. “Only Usatyi knows who these supporters are and how many they are that they deserve making a public call to them,” says the article on sic.md.

Beyond the similarities between the two as political personages, Renato Usatyi has at least two arguments in favor of Trump. The first is that the two politicians will free Moldova from oligarchs. The mayor of Balti promises that, together with Trump, he will solve many problems ‘not only in the U.S., but also in Moldova”  and then explains that he refers to the state captured by a ‘powerful criminal’ and others who are smaller. “It is rather ironic that Usatyi chose namely Donald Trump as a partner in the fight against corruption and oligarchs. The Republican candidate has been involved in different scandals since the 1980s, about ties with the Italian mafia, violation of antitrust laws when purchasing casinos, use of illegal migrants in building works, sexual harassment, etc.” says the article.

The second argument is that Trump will improve the relations between the U.S. and Moldova and with the rest of the countries. Even if Usatyi is sure that Trump as a President will improve the relations between the United States and the rest of the countries, including Moldova, in his statements the Republican candidate shows to be interested in improving the relationship with Russia only. As regards the other countries, Trump considers that China is the main enemy of the U.S. He also wants to build a wall at the border with Mexico with Mexicans’ money and believes that the NATO member states should pay for the U.S. military protection. More precisely about our corner of the world, Eastern Europe, where states like Moldova or the Baltic states count on the Western support as a counterweight to the Russian influence, Trump said the Americans should  withdraw from Ukraine and should leave Germany to defend Kiev.

The authors of the article on sic.md say that judging by the statements and career of Donald Trump, we have reasons to doubt it that Moldova will have something to gain if this becomes the next President of the U.S. At least from the viewpoint of corruption and regional security, the chances incline in favor of a worsening of the situation. Wondering why Usatyi supports Trump, the authors ascertain that both of the politicians have relatively pro-Russian ideological positions and welcome Russia’s intervention in the internal affairs of the own states. The homage rendered by Usatyi to Trump is in fact an occasion for the mayor of Balti to confirm his pro-Russian positions in the eyes of his voters and also of his supporters from outside.
