The seven persons charged in the case of Andrei Braguța, who died as a result of the ill-treatment to which he was subject in penitentiary, found out the sentences passed by the ordinary court on July 19. Five of these were given suspended sentences, one got a jail term, while one was acquitted, IPN reports.

The Buiucani branch of the Chisinau City Court sentenced one of the defendants to five years in prison and gave four-year suspended sentences to another three respondents. The latter were also banned from changing the domicile for three months and were obliged to offer financial support to the family of Andrei Braguța. The seventh accused was acquitted.

Andrei Braguța, 32, was taken into police custody in the summer of 2017 after being stopped by patrol inspectors for speeding and for having an inappropriate behavior. Even if it was determined that he suffered from mental disorders, he was placed in remand detention and was beaten there, dying ten days later.

The accused included three inspectors of the remand prison of the Chisinau Police Division and four detainees who were held in a cell together with Andrei Braguța. Later, another 13 police officers of the remand prison were accused of ill-treating Andrei Braguța.
