The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) in fact did not want to demonstrate in the Great National Assembly Square in Chisinau on May 1. They simply wanted to prevent others from staging events there, Communist MP Sergiu Sarbu said, commenting on the Lib-Dems’ intention to allow the trade unions to hold a rally in the central square of Chisinau on May 1, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Under the law, if there are several applicants, the right to assemble in a particular place is given to the first who submitted the application. On May 20, the Chisinau City Hall announced that this right was won by the PLDM. The members of the Communist Party, who planned to stage the second Civic Congress in the Square on May 1, said they will challenge the mayor’s decision in court as the City Hall backdated the PLDM’s application.
“They did it because they wanted to hinder us from mounting an event in the Great National Assembly Square. The PLDM never intended to hold a meeting there on May 1,” Sergiu Sarbu said in the program “Fabrica” on Publika TV.
Contacted by phone during the program, the deputy head of the PLDM Vadim Pistrinciuc said that the party did not concede the Square to the trade unions, but allows them to demonstrate alongside. “We may have meetings in the morning or the afternoon,” he stated.
A number of parties and organizations wanted to demonstrate in the central square of Chisinau on May 1, including the National Confederation of Trade Unions.
