The executive director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO) Sergiu Ostaf, in an interview for Radio Free Europe, said there are a series of circumstances showing, to a certain extent, that Vlad Filat had to be placed under arrest. He noted that the case started against the ex-Premier is a very sensitive one for Moldova because it refers to very important subjects or situations, with a major impact on our country, IPN reports.

“We saw how the procedures were performed, I would say to the limit allowed by the Parliament’s Regulations. I wouldn’t have expected such a speed of action in the past. On the other hand, performing these procedures in a hurry does not mean violating the legal provisions,” stated Sergiu Ostaf.

As to the fact that this case eclipsed the protests mounted in the center of Chisinau during the last few days and to the allegations that these events were staged in a move to calm the protest spirit down, the CReDO director said the protest movement had and will yet have an impact on the situation in Moldova. “The pressure exerted with the aim of influencing the investigation into the bank frauds played an important role because the political class also examined the option of dismissing heads of law enforcement institutions. It is a multivalent situation where the law enforcement bodies try to be active players and to justify a part of the tasks undertaken before society. In this case, they also play proactively in particular situations,” he stated.

The expert also said that the pressure on the part of the protest movement will continue to have an impact on the way the law enforcement bodies work. If the protesters insist on the quality of justice in the case of Vlad Filat, this will have a positive and beneficial impact on Moldovan justice.
