The decision by the Constitutional Court (CC) to return to the direct election of the head of state is a short-term solution that will create problems in the medium and long terms, Sergiu Ostaf, director of the Resource Center for Human Rights (CReDO), said in the program “Pahomi” on Realitatea TV channel, IPN reports.

“In the medium term or the long term, we will witness a confrontation between the two institutions – the President’s Staff and Parliament. This results from the precedents set earlier, during the terms in office of Mircea Snegur and Petru Lucinschi, who were elected by direct vote. The lack of political culture is another argument. The President will try to form his own group in Parliament,” stated Sergiu Ostaf.

The CReDO director considers the CC’s decision is a remedy prescribed to a patient by an unprofessional doctor. “For a sick person to become well, this must be first diagnosed correctly by a competent doctor, who will prescribe the appropriate treatment. In our case, the patient is treated by an incompetent doctor who does not know the disease of the patient. The CC’s decision will contribute to a worse situation in this country,” he stated.

Sergiu Ostaf believes that Moldova’s problem does not reside in the election of the head of state. “There is political myopia. The problem does not derive from the presidential elections. It resides in the excessively monopolized economy,” he said.
