A 50-year-old woman, diagnosed with end-stage liver disease, underwent a double liver transplant at “Timofei Moșneaga” Republican Clinical Hospital in Chisinau. The first surgery was performed in 2022, with a transplant from a living donor, but the patient had a graft rejection. A few weeks ago, she underwent surgery for the second time, being transplanted liver from a brain-dead donor. The operation went smoothly, said Adrian Hotineanu, head of Surgery Department No. 2, IPN reports.

The head of the General Intensive Care Unit Corina Gutium, where the patient was transferred after surgery, said that it was a complicated case given that it was the second liver transplant for the patient. “This time the new graft started its functions practically a few hours after surgery. The stay in intensive care went without particularities. We managed to transfer her to the specialized department on the sixth postoperative day,” stated the doctor.

The patient, named Mariana, said that she feels well now. “My husband and children are waiting for me at home. I feel very good. I can’t believe I escaped death,” she said, thanking the doctors who helped her stay alive.

This was the second liver transplant performed by the team of “Timofei Moșneaga” Republican Clinical Hospital so far this year.
