Searches in Căinari in electoral corruption case

The National Anticorruption Center (NAC) and prosecutors of Chisinau municipality carried out searches at the home of a resident of Căinari town in Căușeni district, who is investigated in a case of electoral corruption. The man was classed as a suspect and the objects were seized from his home are to be examined. He will be investigated outside remand detention, IPN reports. 

According to investigators, during the presidential election of last autumn, the person concerned allegedly acted as the representative of a political party and offered amounts of 500 to 2,000 lei to electors, asking them to vote for a particular candidate.

The penalty for such acts is 1 to 5 years in prison and a fine of over 50,000 lei. The authorities can seize the assets of the accused person in order to recover the damage. On the other hand, those who denounce such illegalities and cooperate with investigators can be freed from criminal liability.

So far, NAC representatives imposed fines of over 11 million lei in cases of passive electoral corruption, and 10 criminal cases handled together with prosecutors of Chisinau municipality were sent to court.
