The leader of the Social Democracy Party, Dumitru Braghis, during a press conference on Monday, October 2, declared that the communist government has begun a frontal attack on the extra-parliamentary opposition. SDP believes these actions are undertaken because of the 2007 general local elections. Braghis mentioned the start of several penal cases, including on one of the leaders of the Social Democrat Party Eduard Musuc, the chairman of the Labor Union „Patria-Rodina”, Gheorghe Sima and others. Braghis also referred to the several setups towards the free press, the permanent harassment of businessmen, and intimidation of investors. SDP believes the government demonstrates cynicism and criminal indifference towards the problems of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. The prices for products of first necessity have greatly increased; the taxes are exaggerated and surpass the population’s buying potential. The current situation, Braghis stated, will lead to mass protests. According to him, they already received such requests from minibus drivers and farmers. He thinks that less and less people believe that the state of affairs in the Republic of Moldova will change for the better, and this despair forces an ever greater number of persons to leave the country. The Government should ask itself where the country is heading after 6 years of CPRM ruling, Dumitru Braghis concluded.
