The Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) set for October 17 a hearing to consider the admissibility of the appeal filed by the lawyers for Ilan Shor, who was sentenced by the Chisinau Court of Appeals to 15 years in prison. The panel of judges includes Vladislav Gribincea. The information was provided to IPN by representatives of the Court’s Monitoring and Public Relations Department.
The last hearing, scheduled for June 18, was put off because judge Boris Talpă resigned. He was replaced by Vladislav Gribincea, who was appointed as SCJ judge in June from among non-judges.
The 17 October hearing will start at 10.00 a.m. and will not involve the parties.
The examination of the appeal began in November 2023 and the hearings have been postponed for several times since then.
In June 2017, Ilan Shor was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for causing damage to the state through swindle and breach of trust. By the Chisinau Court of Appeals’ decision of April 13, 2023, Ilan Shor was definitively sentenced to 15 years behind bars. The Court of Appeals banned him from holding positions in the banking system for a period of five years, but also ordered the collection of 5.2 billion lei from him. Ilan Shor left the country before the sentence was pronounced, and the extradition requests have so far remained unanswered.
