President Maia Sandu said the fight against corruption and the justice sector reform are extremely important for the Republic ofa Moldova. She voiced hope that the Prosecutor’s Office will not play political games on someone’s instruction or on its own initiative. After the meeting of the Supreme Security Council, when asked by the press to comment on the case of ex-President Igor Dodon, who is under investigation, President Sandu said that if Dodon considers he is honest, he should not be concerned, IPN reports.

“I want a correct, professional and independent justice system that abides by the law to exist in our country. This is what I have pleaded for, this is what the people gave their votes for and supported me for and this is what I and my colleagues work on. Corruption is a major problem in the Republic of Moldova. Owing to corruption, we have poverty, a weak state that is undermined by these corrupt groups,” stated Maia Sandu.

She noted that in the case of Igor Dodon, the Prosecutor General’s Office should investigate the way in which the case is managed, including the events that happened on Tuesday and one day earlier. “The leaks to the press are worrisome and I think the explanations provided by the Prosecutor’s Office so far are not sufficient,” said the official. Maia Sandu noted she learned about the developments involving Igor Dodon from the media, while she was in Boston, the U.S.

As to the accusations that the criminal case against Dodon was started by order, President Sandu reiterated that she does not know the prosecutors who are examining the case. “I repeat that the most important thing in this case, as in other cases, is to ensure maximum transparency, while the prosecutors should abide by the law and should not play political games and take decisions based on political pressure. Everyone should answer for the committed illegalities, but this should happen in strict compliance with the law,” stated Maia Sandu.
