A day before the protests announced by the railway workers, the salary arrears at the state-run enterprise Moldova’s Railways (CFM) were discussed in the plenary session of Parliament, IPN reports.

At Thursday's sitting, the Bloc of Communists and Socialists asked to invite Prime Minister Dorin Recean to Parliament for questioning about the situation at the CFM, where approximately 5,000 employees have not been remunerated since August.

"It is February 13 today, but about 5,000 citizens still live in August 2024. I am talking about 5,000 employees of the state-owned enterprise CFM, where salary arrests were accumulated during August 2024-January 2025," said MP Inga Sibova.

The request to question the Prime Minister in the plenary session of the legislature did not accumulate the required number of votes.

PAS MP Radu Marian said that in 2020, when there was a similar situation at the CFM, the opposition did not ask for the Prime Minister to be questioned. According to him, discussions with the CFM managers and with railway workers unions were held in Parliament.

"The company must continue to take measures to rectify the situation – to identify new customers, to put the unused assets to good use. I know that a railway line with Romania is going to be put into operation, which will generate more opportunities," noted the parliamentarian.

Radu Marian also said that the possibility of allocating money for railway infrastructure at the next budget rectification is also being considered.

The Trade Union Federation of Railway Workers of the Republic of Moldova announced that protests will be staged in front of the Government, Parliament and Presidential Buildings on Friday to seek an immediate solution to the problem of salary arrears and to submit more demands to the authorities. Protests will also be organized at the railway stations in Ocnița, Balti, Ungheni, Bender, Basarabeasca and Giurgiulești.

According to the Federation’s chairman Ion Zaporojan, the employees of the 31 branches of the CFM have not received their salaries for August 2024 through January 2025, which total approximately 190 million lei.
