The activity of the Moldovan Steel Works in Rybnitsa is still suspended due to the energy crisis, aggravated by Russia's attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in November 2024. This is the finding of the EU Ambassador to Moldova Jānis Mažeiks, who paid a visit to the Transnistrian region together with the team of the EU Delegation, IPN reports.

"The team of the EU Delegation discussed with the plan’s managers its capacity to adapt and operate in a liberalized energy market," reads a press release of the EU Delegation to Moldova.

The Delegation reminds of the €20m emergency assistance package offered at the beginning of February to the Transnistrian region. A further €60 million is available, but its release depends on progress in ensuring respect for human rights, fundamental freedoms and a fair energy pricing system. "The European Union is ready to provide support, but in the absence of reforms, support cannot move forward," reads the press release of the EU Delegation.

At the same time, the talks between the EU Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks and the Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselsky focused on the energy and economic crisis, the process of settling the Transnistrian conflict, as well as the human rights situation in the region.

Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks also had discussions with students, teachers and the administration of "Evrika" Romanian-language High School and "A. K. Belitchenko" School No. 10 that teaches in Russian. The official noted that the restoration of the original building to "Evrika" Theoretical High School remains essential to ensure an appropriate learning environment and to solve long-term educational challenges.
