The inauguration of the Romanian Language Monument scheduled for August 31 hasn’t taken place yet owing to misunderstandings related to documentation. The Academy of Sciences of Moldova, which is the author of the initiative, blames the Chisinau City Hall for delaying the procedure. The local authorities deny responsibility, saying the Academy didn’t present the whole set of documents.

The Academy’s general scientific secretary Aurelia Hanganu has told IPN that after the contest, the Academy made the necessary approaches, asking for the approval of the Chisinau Municipal Council. But the answer hasn’t yet come. “It is sheer bureaucracy,” she stated. Meanwhile, the Academy of Sciences suggested changing the place where the monument is to be located from the square of the Academy to the Botanical Garden. Such a decision was taken owing to the controversial discussions on the demolition of the Soviet monument from the square of the Academy.

Contacted by IPN, head of the mayor general’s staff Lilian Carp said the Chisinau Council didn’t provide an answer because the Academy didn’t inform it about the location of the monument.

The monument was designed by two Romanian sculptors. It represents 20 copper plates in the form of pages that will contain fragments from the Romanian literature engraved by laser. The book-monument will be about 6 meters in height and 20 meters in diameter.
