Romanian Government does not recognize Transnistrian “referendum” neither its results

The Romanian Government considers that the so-called “referendum on independence” of the Transnistrian region, organized by the separatist regime from Tiraspol was carried out ignoring the international laws and the constitutional law of the Republic of Moldova and lacking all necessary conditions for admitting legitimacy, a declaration of the Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu announces. According to the Romanian press, which cites the Romanian PM, the action organized on September 17 is making more difficult the situation from the Transnistrian region and hardens the efforts of the international community on politically settling the dispute. “It is obvious that the separatist regime is artificially creating obstacles which slows down the settlement of this situation”, Tariceanu declared. The Romanian Government considers that significant efforts will be needed on behalf of every part involved in the settlement of the Transnistrian dispute, in order to return to the extended format of negotiations. “Any valid and fair solution for the Transnistrian conflict must respect the sovereignty, territorial integrity and legislative framework of the Republic of Moldova. The problems of the Transnistrian region can be solved if real, equilibrated answers, which will guarantee the protection of the human rights of region’s citizens and the chance to build a proper life will be found”, is also said in the declaration of the Romanian PM. The inhabitants of Transnistria were called on Sunday, September 17, to an unconstitutional referendum, organized by the leaders of the self-proclaimed republic and was supported by some political circles from Moscow. The voters were asked whether they want Transnistria independent and further join Russia, or if they want to reintegrate into the Republic of Moldova. According to the results unrecognized by the international community, over 97% of the participants pleaded in favor of the first option.
