Romania decided to increase the number of polling stations that will be opened in the Republic of Moldova for the November 24 presidential election, said the secretary of state of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Romanian Government Adrian Dupu. For Romania’s presidential election, 59 polling stations will be established in the Republic of Moldova, by seven more than in this year’s European Parliament elections, IPN reports.

In the presidential election of Romania, the Romanian citizens abroad can vote for three days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“I think that half a million or at least 400,000 Romanian citizens are in the Republic of Moldova. It was seen in the European Parliament elections. Then, there was good mobilization in the Republic of Moldova, compared to the other countries where we have a Romanian diaspora. It is clear that more can be done and we want more Romanian citizens in the Republic of Moldova to come out and make their choice. This time we will have more polling stations. In the European Parliament elections, there were 52 polling stations - a record number. In the presidential and parliamentary elections, we will have a number of 59 polling stations. There will be at least one polling station in each district. At the European Parliament elections, no polling stations were opened in Criuleni and Ștefan Vodă. At the next elections, there will be stations there, plus five new polling stations in Chisinau, Cahul and Orhei," Adrian Dupu stated in the talk show "Resumé" on RliveTV.

Adrian Dupu also said that, for Romania, the decision for the diaspora to vote during several days was a very good one because the number of polling stations outside is limited. “We will have almost 1,000 polling stations, but they will not be established in every locality where there are 100-200 Romanians. Outside the country, in Italy, France, the U.S., the distances to be covered are very long and so we wanted to give people the opportunity to plan a whole weekend. If they can't come on Sunday, because of the long distance, they can come on Saturday. In the second round of the 2019 presidential election, we saw almost one million Romanians voting abroad," said the secretary of state of the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova of the Government of Romania.

The presidential election in Romania will be held on November 24, and the runoff election will be held on December 8. In the June 2024 European Parliament elections, 57,000 Moldovan citizens holding Romanian citizenship voted on the territory of the Republic of Moldova.
