A forum of scholars of the program of University Scholarships in Law and Humanist Sciences, of the Roma Education Fund, is held in Chisinau on July 9-10, IPN reports.

The Educational Advising Center is the organization that has managed this program in Moldova since 2004. “The Romanies who study and apply to this program are very motivated to acquire a high level of education and good results so as to later become involved in the activities of different NGOs where they can attend foreign language courses and can obtain grants for use at local level,” program coordinator Viorica Volovei said in the event.

The students can get a scholarship of €1,300 and support both from the Educational Advising Center and the Roma Education Fund, said Stela Garaz, program officer of the Budapest Roma Education Fund, which financially supports the initiative.

“This is an international foundation working in our country, which aims to contribute to integrating the Romanies in education institutions. We propose a program of scholarships intended for young Romanies who want to study at universities. They can get a scholarship by submitting the necessary documents to the Educational Advising Center. If they pass the interview stage, they benefit from this opportunity. Since 2004, we have supported about 130 students who received an annual scholarship of €1,300,” stated Stela Garaz.

Besides scholarships, the Roma students are also offered small grants to stimulate their involvement with local initiatives. Three groups of Roma students from Moldova have so far benefitted from grants of €2,500.
