The compensations promised by Moldova Agroindbank (MAIB) to its clients who lost safe-deposited cash and valuables in an overnight burglary on July 6 are “unprecedented”, says Victoria Korol, the bank’s chief communication officer. She told IPN that, per national and regional practices, a bank is not required to pay compensations when safe deposit boxes are involved.

The amount of compensation will depend on the value of the loss as declared to the police and on any confirmation that the clients can present of the valuables stored in the boxes. “If the client can confirm 1,000 euros, then 1,000 euros is what he or she is going to get,” explained Korol.

MAIB also offers a total 1 million lei in rewards to anyone with information instrumental in finding the suspects.

Natalia Stati, spokesperson for the Chisinau Police, said the investigation is ongoing.
