The result of the referendum on the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the European Union is a historic one, said MP Mihail Druță, a member of the Parliament’s Commission on Foreign Policy and European Integration. According to him, the people's choice to support the integration into the civilized European family is an important step for the country.
In a public debate hosted by IPN, Mihail Druta said that the referendum held last autumn was a democratic exercise and it is natural to have votes against. More worrying would have been a result of more than 90% pro, as it happens in totalitarian states.
"The result obtained is very, very good. In the diaspora, the result is also good," said the MP.
Mihail Druta noted that each citizen voted as they felt. But the anti-European propaganda, promoted by most of the candidates who ran in the presidential election, should not be neglected. With small exceptions, they were either evasive or spoke out against the referendum. They disseminated anti-European messages, propaganda messages of the Kremlin in the diaspora as well. Thus, they managed to influence some of the voters abroad.
The public debate entitled "Image of the EU in the perception of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova" was staged as part of the project "IPN News Agency for Social Cohesion and Pro-European Moldova", funded by the IMS.
