The State Weather Service warns that the low water flow in Moldova’s rivers, except for some of the left branches of the Nistru, will persist during July 19-26 due to the lack of precipitation and high temperatures.
The water flow in the Nistru will be by 30-40% under the multiannual average of July (yellow alert), while in the Prut – by 15-30% (orange code). The water flow in small rivers will be by 10-20% under the multiannual average of July (orange alert), while in some of the small rivers, such as Trinca, Delia, Lăpușna, Cubolta, and Botna, the water flow will be 0-10% (red alert).
Specialists of the Chisinau water supplier daily monitor the level of water in the Nistru. In a press release, SA “Apă-Canal Chișinău” says all the residents of the municipality are now supplied with water according to the normal parameters. If the level of water in the Nistru declines, an action plan will be implemented. The level of water in the Nistru is now at 8.6 meters. This level enables the water pumping station that supplies water to Chisinau to function.
The lowest level of water in the Nistru was 8.1 meters and was recorded in 2001. If the level of water in the river declines to 8.3 meters, the pumps can start to malfunction owing to cavitation. Statistics show the minimum level at which the pumping station on the Nistru can work is 8.4 meters. In 2017-2022, the average level of water in the Nistru was 8.9 meters.
The artesian wells are the alternative sources of water for the municipality of Chisinau. The total volume of water taken from artesian wells is 5,000 cubic meters of water daily.
