The latest torrential rain has damaged the crops, mainly in the north and center of the country, the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service has said. According to Ilie Boian, vice director of the State Hydrometeorology Service, the damage was caused by the heavy rain with hail accompanied by strong wind. The rain affected the wheat, rape and sunflowers fields in Ungheni, Soroca and Orhei district. The damage caused and the area of the affected fields have not been assessed yet. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Valeriu Masleanschi, deputy division head at the Ministry of Agriculture, said that they do not possess information about damage, but stressed that the rain, without hail of course, is beneficial to most of the agricultural crops in this period. “The rain is long ago expected by the farmers as it is favorable to corn, sugar beet, soybean, rape and to seasonal fruit and vegetables,” the deputy head of the Horticulture and Plantlet Growing Division said.
