A group of demonstrators in Vulcănești sought the resignation of mayor Nicolae Posmac because the Gagauz flag was not hoisted at the February 20 meeting of Prime Minister Dorin Recean with mayors of the district, IPN’s correspondent in ATU Gagauzia reports.

The rally took place in front of the Vulcănești mayor’s office, where the participants came with a large flag of Gagauzia. They asked the local and central authorities to respect the Gagauz symbols. The Bashkan's adviser Mihail Vlah, in his address to the country's leadership, said that "he will not allow what the fathers-creators built to be trampled upon."

The demonstrators called on the government "to turn its face to the locals" and accused a number of mayors of the Gagauz Autonomous Unit of collusion with officials from Chisinau. While the Russian song "Katyusha" was being played, the group of demonstrators adopted a resolution "on the removal of the Gagauz flag" at the Vulcănești mayor’s office at the joint meeting of the Executive Committee and the People's Assembly.

The absence of the Gagauz flag was highlighted after the meeting that Prime Minister Dorin Recean had on February 20 with mayors of Vulcănești district. In the room where the meeting took place, the flag of the Republic of Moldova and the flag of the European Union were raised. After this case, "accusations of treason" against the mayor were formulated at the local level. The organizers of the meeting were accused of intentionally removing the Gagauz flag. The Government’s spokesman Daniel Vodă later denied these allegations.
