Pupils from pre-university institutions in the republic will have a winter holiday this year only up to January 8, one week shorter than in the past. Previously, the winter holiday lasted 3 weeks, being shortened down to 2 this year.
The chief of the pre-university education department within the Ministry of Education and Youth, Nadejda Velisco told Info-Prim Neo that the reduction of the winter holiday was done especially because of the move, in the last few years, to 5 day study weeks. This reduces the school year, and respectively, the holidays, said the source.
The matter was also discussed by the chiefs of education departments in the republic, reaching the conclusion the pupils’ holidays are too long, fact which is damaging the educational process.
The next holiday that pupils will have is going to be the spring break – from March 5 to 11. Another spring holiday will be the Easter holiday, when the pupils will rest between April 8 and 15. The spring holidays were not shortened and the Easter holiday was introduced in the last two years.
According to Nadejda Velisco, generally, the educational system in the R. Moldova has the longest holidays.
Up to 1999, the study week was a 6 day one.
