The pumping (boring) station in Otaci town was rehabilitated with the assistance of IOM Moldova. A pluvial drainage system was built and a road section at the entrance to the frontier post was repaired. The station serves over 6,000 people each day and the pluvial drainage system helps to reduce traffic congestion at the border crossing point, IPN reports.

The old pump that consumed a significant quantity of electricity and caused water shortages for half of the town’s inhabitants was replaced with a submersible water pump that saves energy. The operating procedure was automated to minimize flaws and to improve energy efficiency.

IOM Moldova Chief of Mission Lars Johan Lönnback said he is sure that this support offered by the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration will strengthen the new humanitarian development framework in the Republic of Moldova and will also support the integration of the Ukrainian refugees and citizens affected by the conflict in Ukraine and will satisfy the needs of the host communities welcoming them.

The IOM aims to continue promoting sustainable solutions, ensuring services in the war-affected areas and facilitating transition to efficient and sustainable systems for economic and social recovery. “I would take this occasion to congratulate the mayor of Otaci and the resident members of the community. This accomplishment is a proof of the collective effort and the unwavering commitment of all those involved,” noted Lars Johan Lönnback.

The project was supported financially with the generosity of the U.S. Government.
