A public association called “Choice and Alternative for Gagauzia” was launched today. Its members said that they are ready to help improve the lives of citizens in the region and to become actively involved to support the authorities in this desideratum, but also to ensure transparency in decision-making processes.

“We, as representatives of civil society, understand that today it is the duty of every citizen to defend Gagauzia. We are also aware of our responsibility towards former, current and future generations. We want to note that the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, with its special status and as a component part of the Republic of Moldova, has the right not only to existence, but also to consolidated development,” the association’s head Igor Ianac stated in a news conference hosted by IPN.

Igor Ianac noted that the socioeconomic situation in Gagauzia has worsened and, with great regret, the region also experiences an institutional crisis. His team carried out an analysis of the situation and identified a number of problematic aspects, including demographic ones. In his opinion, programs are needed to support the families, young people, to stimulate natality and also to extend life expectancy.

Also, as the head of the association noted, increased attention should be paid to the field of education. The graduates from Gagauzia have a harder time coping with competition on the labor market. To help them, programs to learn the state language and also foreign languages are necessary.

According to Igor Ianac, programs are needed both in the economic and social fields to support the population facing multiple difficulties. Such programs with measures are to be developed by representatives of the association, in cooperation with representatives of the public authorities. The association has already submitted requests to the Gagauz administration to be included in the executive and legislative processes as representatives of civil society.
