The candidates of the Party of Socialists won the elections in nine constituencies of ATU Gagauzia. Several independents, who were supported by PSRM in elections, also entered the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia. At the next stage, the party will take part in the formation of a majority on the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, IPN reports, quoting a press release of PSRM.

The party has always pleaded for decent representation of the Gagauz people in the national authorities. Representatives of ATU Gagauzia formed part of all the parliamentary groups of PSRM and today the parliamentary group of the Bloc of Communists and Socialists is the only one that includes three Gagauz people, runs the party’s press release.

The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia consists of 35 deputies who are elected in 35 single-member constituencies of the Autonomous Territorial Unit. Eighteen deputies were elected in the ordinary elections held on September 19. In 11 constituencies where none of the candidates gained at least half of the vote, a runoff vote was held on October 3, while in six constituencies where the elections weren’t declared valid owing to the low voter turnout, new elections took place the same day.

After polls closed at 9pm, the local Election Commission announced that 24,789 citizens cast their ballots in the elections, which is 37% of the voters put on rolls. The highest turnout, of 78.2%, was recorded in Bugeac constituency, where Vladimir Cîssa defeated Alexandr Chendighelean. The lowest turnout, of only 37.2%, was reported in Baurci constituency, where Grigori Cadân emerged victorious.
