The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PSRM) accuses the government of defying the country’s status of neutrality by extending cooperation with NATO and expresses its concern about this. In a press release, the party says the new Moldova-NATO Individual Partnership Action Plan for 2022-2023 that was approved by the government envisions, among others, the holding of political consultations at different levels between Chisinau and the NATO member states on foreign policy and security matters, IPN reports.

“By this document, the Moldovan government accepted the extension of NATO control over the armed forces of Moldova and the transfer of information about defense to the North Atlantic Alliance. This is absolutely unacceptable for a neutral state. We are against discussing aspects of the internal policy of our state with this military organization of which Moldova does not form part,” stated PSRM.

The party expressed its concern about Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu’s visit to the NATO Headquarters in Brussels and the meetings with the Alliance’s chiefs, which were held behind closed doors. It also disapproves of the intention to hold a joint meeting of the Governments of the Republic of Moldova and Romania on February 11, “which will involve the minister of defense of the NATO member state, as this is a direct method for ensuring the Romanian departments’ control over the political, economic, financial and defense sectors of the Republic of Moldova and the subsequent absorption of our country by Romania.”

“The Party of Socialists firmly condemns such actions by the Government of the Republic of Moldova and insists on the abandonment of actions that lead to the undermining of the sovereignty and status of neutrality of our country,” concluded the party.
