The Party of Socialists (PSRM) condemns the Democratic Party’s initiative to amend the Constitution and stipulate the European integration as Moldova’s strategic orientation there, IPN reports. The PSRM considers any intervention in the text of the basic law without prior public debates and without the support of the population and the absolute majority of MPs is inappropriate.

According to a press statement of the party, the country’s strategic development course can and should be determined by the Moldovans by a national referendum. “Such changes cannot be imposed on the people by a party that won slightly over 15% of the vote in the parliamentary elections and ranked only fourth in these elections. The European integration course became a disaster for the Republic of Moldova,” says the statement.

“During the years of the so-called European integration, the people of Moldova became completely poor. Billions of euros were robbed in the country. More than 100 people leave the country daily. Namely the current Government, with the direct participation of the PDM, did everything to discredit and thwart the European course, reducing the number of supporters of the European integration from 70% to less than 35%”.

The PSRM reiterated its commitment to lead Moldova to the Eurasian Economic Union, noting this is the only course that can ensure the recovery of the country’s economy, diminution of the prices of energy resources for Moldova and return of the Moldovan products to traditional markets. The Socialists intend to block in Parliament the Democrats’ initiative.

The president of the Democratic Party Vlad Plahotniuc, after the traditional meeting held at the party’s head office on September 12, said the PDM will initiate the procedure for amending the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. According to the Democratic leader, the initiative is based on the September 9, 2014 judgment of the Constitutional Court, which specifies that the orientation to the European system of democratic values is a defining element of the constitutional identity of the Republic of Moldova. ”Given this decision, we decided to initiate the modification of the Constitution by introducing a reference that would clearly show that the European integration is the strategic orientation of the Republic of Moldova,” stated Vlad Plahotniuc.
