A number of citizens staged a protest in front of the Presidential Office in connection with the promulgation by President Nicolae Timofti of the package of laws for which the Government assumed responsibility. The people expressed their indignation at the fact that the repayment of the money stolen from the banking system is made their responsibility, IPN reports.

Inga Grigoriu, one of the leaders of the Civic Platform “Dignity and Truth”, which organized the protest, said President Nicolae Timofti could have refused to promulgate the law that provides that the Government will repay the loans released by the National Bank to the three bankrupt banks Banca de Economii, Banca Sociala and Unibank. “We consider that Nicolae Timofti, whose term in office is close to an end, showed to us all that he is an accomplice to the theft of the century,” she stated.

The leader of the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase, who is a candidate for President, said the Head of State should have issued a decree by which to request Parliament to examine the draft law on the issuing of state bonds for fulfilling the Ministry of Finance’s obligations deriving from the state guarantees. “Only one sentence was required of the one who now holds the office of President, but our President is not ours, of the people, but of the mafia,” he said.

The protesters demanded that the stolen money should be restored and that President Nicolae Timofti should tender his resignation. “Timofti made so many mistakes already that he was to leave the post long ago,” stated one of the protesters. “We came to the protest to find out something about the stolen US$1 billion and about the dubious legislation that is adopted,” said another protester.

Secretary General of the President’s staff Ion Paduraru reacted to the protest staged in front of the Presidential Office, calling it an electoral meeting. According to him, the President cannot send back a law for which the Government assumed responsibility to Parliament for reexamination.
