Promo-LEX Association called on UEFA not to allow holding football matches in Tiraspol as long as the observance of the human rights on the left side of the Nistru is not ensured. The approach was made in connection with the serious human rights violations committed in the region and the murder in suspicious conditions of the opposition leader Oleg Horjan, IPN reports.

Promo-LEX sent a letter to the UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin and the organization’s Executive Committee, informing them about the real situation in the Transnistrian region.

“Sheriff Holing is not a simple manager of the football club with the same name. This controls the most important sectors of the local economy, including the de facto administration in Tiraspol. As a result, Sheriff Holding can be considered responsible for the violation of human rights on the left side of the Nistru: acts of discrimination against ethnic or linguistic groups, restriction of the freedom of expression and the freedom of movement, persecution of civil and political activists, etc.” shows a press release.

Furthermore, as the so-called yellow-coded terrorism threat was extended by the Transnistrian administration at least until September 16, 2023, UEFA’s July 4 decision to allow holding matches in Tiraspol is apparently based on erroneous or incomplete information.

Through its Human Rights Commitment, UEFA aims to run all of its activities and events with respect for human rights and the environment. But when permission is given to hold sports matches in a territory that is controlled by a holding (a private group of persons) that is directly responsible for serious human rights violations, UEFA violates its own commitment, says Promo-LEX.

A new football match in Tiraspol is to take place today, August 10. In this connection, Promo-LEX called on the UEFA President and Executive Committee to take note of the security circumstances and the disastrous human rights situation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova.
