The state will pay monthly allowances to professional athletes, including those who are on sick or maternity leave, as well as lifetime allowances to athletes and coaches, depending on the accomplishments. This is provided in the new Law on Physical Education and Sports, which was approved by the Cabinet, IPN reports.
According to Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun, the document aims to support professional sports, strengthen physical education in schools and popularize healthy lifestyles.
As regards professional sports, the draft law provides for a more efficient allocation of funds for sports federations and clubs and stipulates clear criteria for the recognition of bodies that contribute to the development of this field.
The bill also prioritizes the training of teachers in the field of physical education, the development of sports infrastructure and the promotion of Olympic and Paralympic movements.
"In recent years, thanks to the improvement of training conditions, the augmentation of financial allocations for sports activities and increase in allowances for professional athletes, the Republic of Moldova obtained a record number of medals at Olympic and non-Olympic events," noted the Ministry of Education.
