The Press Council of Moldova calls on the journalists from abroad to inform themselves from credible and diverse sources about the situation in the Republic of Moldova. The Council’s head Ludmila Andronic has told IPN that respectable European media outlets distorted the image and meaning of the latest events taking place in Chisinau.

The call was made to members of the Alliance of Independent Press Councils of Europe, which consists of self-regulatory journalistic bodies from 31 countries. The call says the Republic of Moldova is a country that seldom appears in the international media landscape and only on the occasion of extreme or extraordinary events. Currently, Moldova experiences exactly such a dramatic event, which arouses the interest of the international mass media – a long and traumatic process of investing a new government amid large-scale protests that make the situation tense.

“We yet ascertain that many foreign media outlets broadcast erroneous information about the reality in Moldova and we understand that these are not based on elementary information actions that are mandatory for quality journalism. As a result, the inaccurate interpretations of the foreign mass media are used by some of the local media outlets as arguments in evident manipulation actions,” reads the call.

Ludmila Andronic said she called on the foreign journalists to inform themselves more and from trustworthy sources. “We thought we should make this call to the Alliance so that this helps us draw our colleagues’ attention to the fact that they didn’t adopt a professional and ethical approach in covering the events and didn’t make use of all the sources in a correct and professional way,” she stated.

“We made the call so as to make our colleagues from abroad to inform themselves more when they write about Moldova and to find more, alternative sources so that they present the events in the country in the most objective and balanced way and these event’s meaning and the image of Moldova are not affected.”

The call was distributed to all the Press Councils that form part of the Alliance.
