“President Maia Sandu referred strictly to assemblies where public order is seriously violated and where neither the organizers nor the local public authorities that are responsible for the management of the protest fulfill their obligation to stop this,” spokeswoman for the President’s Office Sorina Ștefîrță stated after experts of Promo-LEX said the idea of amending the law on assembly is detrimental, IPN reports.
Sorina Ștefîrță noted that such interventions, if they are authorized, will no way encroach on the people’s freedom of assembly and their right to protest.
President Maia Sandu requested the Government to consider temporarily amending the legislation so as to enable the police to maintain public order even when particular players of the local administration sabotage the Government’s efforts to keep stability and order in the country. The request was made after the central artery of Chisinau last Monday was blocked by protesters mobilized by the Shor Party, who pitched tents on the main boulevard of the city.
Consequently, Promo-LEX Association expressed its concern about President Maia Sandu’s proposal to amend the legislation so as to facilitate the police’s intervention in assemblies. It described the idea of amending the law on assembly as detrimental as this law is one of the best in the region, According to the experts of Promo-Lex, the law on assembly in the Republic of Moldova ensures a favorable framework for exercising the freedom of assembly. The amendment of this law is not opportune and cannot be influenced by an alleged conflict between the local public administration and the police.
