President Voronin pays a visit to Comrat

During his visit to Comrat, President Vladimir Voronin met with the members of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) from UTA Gagauz-Yeri. According to the Presidential Press Unit, the head of state was informed about the activity of CEC from Gagauzia within the electoral campaign for the election of region’s governor (bashkan). President Voronin “emphasized the importance of organizing democratic and correct elections in the Gagauz autonomous unit. The main mission of CEC is ensuring freedom of speech and respecting the option of all citizens, as well as creating equal conditions to all electoral concurrent”. In this context, the president declared “that it would be rational that the specialized bodies study the opportunity of suspending during the electoral campaigns all legal proceedings related to the candidates for the office of Gagauzia’s bashkan. A press release publicized by the Presidency says that the head of state tackled at a meeting with decision-making authorities from Gagauzia the issue of settling closer collaboration between the CEC from Gagauz-Yeri and OSCE in light of monitoring elections and between the CEC of the Republic of Moldova.
