Opinion leaders urged President Nicolae Timofti to take a more active part in settling political conflicts. The proposal was made in a meeting called by the head of state to discuss the political situation in the country. “The general opinion is that President Nicolae Timofti must become more involved in solving political conflicts, especially those that appear inside the ruling alliance. He was asked to exercise the constitutional power of mediator in the political sphere and he agreed,” political analyst Petru Bogatu, who took part in the meeting, has told Info-Prim Neo. Another idea supported was that the head of state must have a more prominent position in the public area and must not overlook different situations that endanger the functioning of the state institutions. The President was asked to submit proposals when the ruling parties face problems that they cannot overcome. “We spoke about corruption and selective justice, which are very serious matters and the head of state’s intervention would be beneficial and awaited by society. The President has a greater role when there is a government coalition rather than when there is a one-party government. He plays the role of a mediator,” said the analyst. According to Petru Bogatu, the participants in the meeting said that the early elections should be avoided and the ruling parties should start talks so as to remove the serious hindrances to the Government’s activity. These things must be done with patience. The President has the political, constitutional and moral authority for being above political struggles,” stated the analyst. Nicolae Timofti convoked the opinion leaders to discuss the political situation created in Moldova after the withdrawal of the PLDM from the Alliance for European Integration on February 13.
