"Two years prior to the proclamation of Independence, on August 31, 1989, a step of great importance in the history of our country was taken, by voting to switch to Latin spelling and declaring the Romanian language as the official state language", said Academician Ion Tighineanu, President of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (AȘM). During an event dedicated to the national celebration of Our Language, Ion Tighineanu said that today, August 31, "we have reached the 32nd year since we speak Romanian at home, use the Latin script and are proud of the fact that we speak, write and think Romanian".
"The period between August '89 and August '91 has a special significance for our country. Every year, year after year, we continue to feel strong emotions when we recall the events that marked our destiny, which took place on August 31, 1989, and August 27, 1991. In the process of restoring the scientific truth, the Academy of Sciences of Moldova has been and remains a strong pillar, approving as early as September 9, 1994, in the AȘM presidium meeting, the opinion of the country's philological specialists that the language spoken in Moldova is Romanian", said the academician.
Ion Tighineanu said that the scientific truth cannot be concealed, a fact confirmed by the 2013 Constitutional Court decision, which found that the Declaration of Independence, which stipulates that the state language is Romanian, prevails over the Constitution. "In the year 2021, a pandemic year, our work has been disrupted and the pandemic essentially changed our priorities, but it could not interfere in the natural course of things - in our desire to celebrate the Romanian language in our home", the AȘM president said.
The academician said that August 31 has a special significance beyond the field of contemporary philology, because its symbolism extends beyond the boundaries of our thinking, having social, economic, cultural and educational significance. "Today we learn to live independently in our own home. We are working to pass on an independent country to our children and to our grandchildren. Let us all empower each other - experienced scientists, founders of highly recognized scientific schools at home and abroad, young researchers, students who choose research as a way of life, and teachers - to successfully accomplish the tasks set before us today. And thus make our contribution to the sustainable development of tomorrow's society", said Ion Tighineanu.
"Let us have an optimistic view of the future and invest in the future of Moldova, which is making new and beautiful achievements in its history", said the AȘM president.
