The referendum is the most democratic form through which the people can directly decide things that are important for the country, said the chairwoman of the Central Electoral Commission Angelica Caraman. “On October 20, don’t stand aside. Vote in the first round as the second round for the referendum does not exist. Vote with confidence,” the CEC head urges in an explanatory message about the plebiscite, IPN reports.

Angelica Caraman said that on October 20, the voting-eligible citizens are invited to choose the path they want to follow. Through the referendum, it is proposed supplementing the Constitution with two new paragraphs, which reaffirm the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the country’s European path. The voters will answer will answer “Yes” or “No” the question: “Are you for amending the Constitution so as to enshrine the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in it?”

For the national constitutional referendum to be declared valid, at least one third of the people put on the electoral rolls must vote in it. The law is considered adopted if the majority of citizens who participated in the referendum voted “Yes” in the plebiscite.

The Central Election Commission will submit a report on the results of the referendum to the Constitutional Court, which, for its part, within ten days will validate or invalidate the plebiscite outcome by a decision.

The law adopted by referendum shall be published in a special edition of the Official Gazette and the date of its passing shall be considered the day of the national constitutional referendum.
