Prime Minister Dorin Recean will go to Parliament on Thursday to ask for the establishment of a state of emergency for a period of 60 days. The Government’s spokesman Daniel Vodă announced this after the Cabinet’s ordinary meeting, IPN reports.

"This measure is necessary, first of all, amidst the risks to the country's energy security," said Daniel Vodă.

According to the Commission for the Emergency Situations’ report, the electricity import capacity in the country is limited to 315 megawatts through the interconnection with Romania, which is insufficient to satisfy demand during peak hours.

"The susceptibility is accentuated by the fact that the Isaccea Vulcănești interconnection power line crosses the territory of Ukraine, which makes it vulnerable in the event of new attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. At the same time, if natural gas is not delivered by Gazprom, the Kuchurgan plant will not be able to ensure the necessary production of electricity under the same conditions," stated the Government’s spokesman.

Daniel Vodă also referred to the humanitarian effects of the possible cessation of gas supplies to the Transnistrian region starting with January 1.

He noted that when the state of emergency is declared, the Commission for the Emergency Situations could adopt urgent measures to deal with the expected risks.
