Ambassador Tatiana Molcean, Moldova’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office and to other international organizations based in Geneva, was appointed president of the General Assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), IPN reports.
In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration says the two-year term in office starts immediately after the ending of the 62nd WIPO General Assembly that is held in Geneva during October 4-8.
“It is a premiere for the diplomatic service of the Republic of Moldova. For the first time, a representative of the country takes up such a high-ranking post in an international organization of the UN system. This is also a symbolical event as the Republic of Moldova in 2021 celebrates the 30th anniversary of the accession to the World Intellectual Property Organization,” noted the Ministry.
The Republic of Moldova will be an active member in setting the global agenda in the field of intellectual property. It will take part directly in debates on key subjects from the institution’s agenda. “I will continue the effort to facilitate interaction between the implementation of instruments for protecting intellectual property and the solving of pressing problems in the health sector through innovation, transfer of technology and trade. Priority will be also given to the promotion of innovation among young people and to gender aspects,” Ambassador Tatiana Molcean stated on the occasion of her appointment.
Founded in 1967, the World Intellectual Property Organization brings together 193 member states. Its major role is to promote a balanced and effective international system of Intellectual Property that enables to develop innovations and creativity for everyone’s benefit. The Republic of Moldova joined WIPO in 1991.
