With 97% of the votes counted, the results show the current Liberal mayor general of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca won over 37% of the ballot, while the Party of Socialists’ candidate Zinaida Grecheanyi – 36%. Thus, the two contenders will compete for the mayoralty of Chisinau in the second round of voting in two weeks, IPN reports.
The candidate of the Electoral Bloc “European People’s Party of Moldova” Oazu Nantoi came third with 10% of the vote. The Our Party’s candidate Ilian Casu gained 4.8% of the poll, Vasili Chirtoca, who represented the Party of Communists – 4.02%, Serafim Urecheanu, of the Liberal Democratic Party – 2.8%, the Democratic Party’s candidate Monica Babuc – 2.08%, while Oleg Brega, who represented the “Democracy at Home” Party – 1.38%. The other candidates garnered less than 1%.
The preliminary data show the Party of Socialists won 35% of the votes in the race for the Chisinau Municipal Council and will be thus represented by 19 councilors. The Liberal Party gained 29% (17 councilors), the Electoral Bloc “European People’s Party of Moldova” - 11% (6 councilors), the Our Party - 6% (3 councilors), the Party of Communists - 5% (3 councilors), the Liberal Democratic Party - 3% (2 councils) and the Democratic Party - 2% (1 councilor).
