“The National Political Delegation of the National Liberal Party (NLP) expresses its deep concerns about the blatant anti-democratic side-slips, in which President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin has indulged in at the recent press conference, where he uttered irresponsible threats against the local authorities which put the communists into the opposition in the recent local elections”, a statement by NLP reads. Actually, the communist president, in the name of the central administration, has declared “a total war” on the regional administrations where the communists didn’t obtain the majority in the councils. Such an approach to governance is inadmissible for a state, member of the Council of Europe and aspirant to EU membership, - mention the authors of the statement. NLP considers that this approach can result in considerable regresses in the process of modernisation of state institutions and preparing Moldova to initiate, finally, the reforms required by the EU commitment. NLP calls on the democratic forces in Moldova to begin the procedure of removing the President from power for violating the Constitution, and believes that only by uniting the efforts of these forces it is possible to counteract the post-election hysteria of communist leaders. Vladimir Voronin, referring to the fact that in most of the regions non-communist leaders were elected, told a press conference that it is absolutely unclear how the cooperation between the central and local authorities will take place from now on. He accused the fact that in most of the regions the local authority is situated in an unyielding opposition to the central authorities. Nevertheless, says Vladimir Voronin, the central authorities cannot and will not be indifferent to everything that takes place in the areas. Under these circumstances, the government will opt for concentrating budgetary funds to implement strategic projects for regional development, including construction of roads of national significance, modernisation of water supply systems, and creation of a modern irrigation system, said the president.
