The National Theater “Mihai Eminescu” and “Aleksander Węgierka” Theater of Białystok will be staging the Polish Theater Week in Chisinau on November 1- 8, with support from the Polish Embassy in Moldova and the Ministry of Culture of Poland, IPN reports.
In a press release, the organizers say the event is held to celebrate 250 years of public theater in Poland by a series of activities that will highlight the values of the Polish theater. The Polish culture feels at home on the stage of the Moldovan theater. The play “Out at sea” was recently presented. A troupe of artists, director Agnieszka Korytkowska-Mazur, scene painter Paweł Dobrzycki and choreographer Maciej Zakliczynski came to Chisinau to put on “The house on the border” by the same Slawomir Mrozek.
The Polish Theater Week in Chisinau includes the presentation of six plays – two of the host theater and four of the colleagues from Białystok. The event starts with the premiere of “The house on the border” and will continue with three successful plays produced by the Theater “Aleksander Węgierko”, namely “Shakespeare” by Dana Łukasińska (November 3 and 4), “Guguły” (Aguride) by Wioletta Grzegorzewska (November 5 and 6), and “Glany na glanc” (Cherry docs) by David Gow (November 7 and 8). All the plays match the style of the contemporary Polish theater.
“Shakespeare” is a complex play about passions, human desires, violence in arts, theatralization of politics and politicization of theater. The genius from Stafford is passed through a meat cutting machine that treats the people’s culture like a piece of meat. The produced pie is as invigorating as the one seen in
“Titus Andronicus”.
“Aguride” tells about the beginning of adolescence, amid Polish realities, of those who will never leave the commune Hektary and of those who choose to live in town.
“Cherry Docs” describes a meeting of two persons with diametrically opposed attitudes – a skinhead who killed an Indian and a liberal Jewish man who will be his lawyer. Nothing suggests the possibility of cooperation between the two. However, the lawyer makes a courageous attempt to understand the mentality of his client. The play was premiered in Canada 15 years ago and raises problems that still exist in Poland – cases of nationalism and racist aggression.
