A former border policeman from Briceni was sentenced for illegally transporting seven men from Ukraine. According to the authorities, these paid US$25,000 to be helped to illegally reach the Republic of Moldova from where to go to the European Union, IPN reports.

According to the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, the 42-year-old man worked for the Border Police when he committed the crime. He took the migrants from near the border with Ukraine, transported them to Edineț district, where they stayed at a hotel, and then continued their way to Balti, then to the border with Romania.

The investigations continue and prosecutors are taking measures to establish the identity of other people involved.

The authorities inform that the scheme was discovered during border control, when it was found that the entry stamps in the passports of the Ukrainian citizens were absent.

The former policeman admitted his guilt and the Balti Court imposed a fine of 45,000 lei on him and confiscated the illegally obtained US$25,000 and the car used to transport the migrants. The court prohibited the defendant from carrying out, for four years, any activity related to the organization of the entry, stay and transit of foreign citizens in Moldova.
