The former head of the Criminal Police Service of the Hâncești Police Inspectorate was sentenced to 12 years and a half in jail for killing a young man at a swimming pool in Hânceşti last summer. He was found guilty of abuse of power by using the firearm and intentional murder, IPN reports, quoting a press release of the Prosecutor General’s Office.

In June 2018, three men aged 20, among whom the son of former MP Anatolie Zagorodnyi, decided to swim in the pool of a recreational center outside the working hours, without permission. The center’s owner asked the policeman to help him punish those who enter the recreational center without authorization and cause damage. In the absence of legal powers and of a complaint about the commission of an offense, the two staged an ambush at the swimming pool, using the service gun. One of the three young men who were swimming that night was seriously hurt and died shortly afterward.

The same day, the police officer and the owner of the recreational center were arrested. The criminal case against the owner was later dropped.

The prosecutors said they will challenge the sentence and will seek a harsher punishment for the former police officer and the conviction of the owner of the recreational center.
